He was appointed Attorney General of India holding the post since 30.06.2017.
At the age of 89 years he is still working and arguing the cases before the Hon'ble Supreme Court as an young Advocate with full fire.
He was born at Kanhangad, which was a town in the earlier South Canara District of Madras Presidency of British India which falls into Kerala State at present.
His father-M. Nambiar was a Barrister which probably attracted Mr. Venugopal towards this legal profession.
He was instrumental in Drafting the Constitution of Bhutan as he
was appointed by the Royal Govt. of Bhutan to serve as Constitutional Adviser for Drafting the Constitution of Bhutan.
He was also conferred Padma Vibhushan in the year 2015.
He is a strong initiator and supporter for judicial reforms in India.
He is against the idea of establishing Regional Benches of the Supreme Court of India and instead he is of the view that there should be Courts of Appeal establish in four Region of the Country for finally deciding the Appeals from the High Court like Supreme Court do at present time and the Supreme Court should be left for deciding the Constitutional Cases and other cases involving the important question of law.
